The community unites for Seventh Annual “Rise Up for Ryan” Tournament and Suicide Awareness Walk honoring Ryan Patrick O’Shea’s legacy with basketball, remembrance, and vital mental health resources.
The Ryan Patrick O’Shea Foundation hosted its seventh annual “Rise Up for Ryan” 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and Suicide Awareness Walk on July 26 at Lister Park. Under perfect summer skies, the day blended sports, remembrance, and outreach, reinforcing the foundation’s mission to spread hope and awareness. Drawing nearly 200 basketball players across 46 teams and about 70 participants for the walk, the event served as both a heartfelt thank-you to the community for its continued support and an opportunity to promote suicide prevention. Around 50 volunteers helped the day run smoothly.
The foundation was created to honor Ryan Patrick O’Shea, a South Side High School basketball captain and Iona University student, who died by suicide in 2019. The event not only celebrated Ryan’s life and the community’s spirit but also highlighted the importance of mental health resources, with organizers encouraging attendees to remember the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
