The Ryan Patrick O’Shea Foundation sponsored a Suicide Prevention Awareness Workshop at Adelphi University College of Nursing and Public Health. Senior Adjunct Professor, Marianne Lawless, and Director of Clinical Education and Simulation Lab Anthony Eagan, welcomed former Adelphi professor and current Duke University School of Nursing Assistant Professor, Dr. Marissa Abram, back to campus to present a day long workshop on peer support, suicide prevention, asking the right questions, listening and connecting when it matters most. The students participated in small group case studies followed by large group discussions with a question and answer session. The students were fully engaged in working through various scenarios designed to help them recognize and respond to signs of crisis not only in their professional roles as health care providers but amongst their own peers and in their own communities. Healthcare professionals are engaged in everyday activities that are often too difficult to leave at the door at the end of a workday. The discussion provided valuable lessons on self care and stress management as well as key reminders to check in on one another. The foundation would like to thank all the coordinators, professionals and especially the participating students for making this event a tremendous success.
