The Ryan Patrick O’Shea Foundation proudly hosted its fourth annual “Rise Up for Ryan” 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and Suicide Awareness Walk, bringing the community together again to honor Ryan’s legacy through sport, remembrance, and connection.
It was a very warm and sunny summer day, perfect for a full slate of basketball and community spirit. This year’s tournament reached new heights with an incredible 59 teams and 235 players, making it our largest event to date. The day began with a moving tribute — each session opened with Whitney Houston’s unforgettable rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner from her Super Bowl performance, setting a tone of pride, unity, and gratitude.
DJ Pace kept the energy going all day long, filling Lister Park with music and excitement as games tipped off across multiple courts. Players of all ages and skill levels gave their all, supported by cheering friends, family members, and volunteers who made the day run seamlessly from start to finish.
As always, the event celebrated more than just basketball. It served as a reminder of our mission — to promote suicide awareness, mental health support, and community togetherness in memory of Ryan Patrick O’Shea, a beloved South Side High School basketball captain and Iona University student whose life continues to inspire others.
