The goal of signage soon to be placed at the Rockville Centre train station is to prevent suicide.

Administrators in Half Hollow Hills have been busy getting ready for the 2024-2025 school year by participating in professional development sessions at their Leadership Retreat that included training on how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents, as well as learning about the indicators of abuse and how to promote resilience.

The Ryan Patrick O’Shea Foundation proudly hosted its fifth annual “Rise Up for Ryan” 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and Suicide Awareness Walk, bringing together friends, families, and neighbors to honor Ryan’s memory and support mental health awareness.

The Ryan Patrick O’Shea Foundation spreads a positive message during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Named in memory of a South Side High School graduate who committed suicide in January 2019, the foundation works to break the stigma by promoting mental health awareness in local schools and communities.

The RPO Foundation had a wonderful time at the NY Islanders’ Mental Health Awareness game on January 9th! In recognition of Suicide Awareness Month, the Town of Hempstead has teamed up with the Ryan Patrick O’Shea Foundation of Rockville Centre to host its first suicide prevention and awareness event, on Sept. 26, at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion in Hempstead.

The Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee gathered at Kasey’s Kitchen and Cocktails on May 24 to present each of the three charities — one local, one national, and one based in Ireland — with a check for $60,000.

Each St Patrick's Day, thousands of parades both in America and around the world take place. However, in the Long Island area of New York, one parade that is lovingly known as "the parade that cares and shares" stands out due to its year-round focus on supporting charities.

The Ryan Patrick O'Shea Foundation is happy to announce that our Mindfulness, Resilience & Yoga program is back! The program is in all 5 Rockville Centre Elementary schools including the Rise and Core programs.

On March 13th & 14th, Police Commissioner James Vafeades and the Rockville Centre Police Department held an important suicide awareness training event for their officers. Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training – ASIST – conducted a two-day workshop for RCPD officers that educated them on how to help prevent suicide in our community. The training is meant to increase mental health awareness and act as a suicide first aid course.

Our 3rd annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament was held on Sunday July 24th at Mill River Outdoor Courts in RVC. Congratulations to all the champions and thank you so much for everyone who participated in the basketball tournament and the walk. This year we also had music, food trucks, cornhole, face painting and more! Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and resources to make this special day possible.

After successfully launching a Sources for Strength program at South Side High School to foster support and a sense of unity for those dealing with mental health issues, the program has expanded to elementary schools and to classes in the Oceanside and Freeport school districts.
